On a chilly Thursday in January, students from the McLean Envirothon Club and the Longfellow Middle School Eco Action Club assembled students, scientists, educators, and local environment advocates for one cause: bringing awareness to one of the most ecologically devastating problems&mdash; light pollution. This form of pollution is often overlooked, yet it is one that has the ability to endanger countless species. From altering migration patterns, to interfering with pollinators, and even disrupting the circadian rhythm of humans and animals, light pollution disrupts virtually every part of the ecosystem. Although this event has now passed, these environmentally conscious youth continue to expand their message: contacting politicians, disseminating information to the community, and continuing to log data about our community. Their impact can best be seen in the promotion of best practices for outdoor lighting, encouragement of voluntary adoption of lighting practices, empowerment of students, and the support of dark sky-friendly legislation, such as HB407, &ldquo;Light pollution education and dark sky preservation.&rdquo; The McLean Envirothon Club continues to urge homeowners to address their own light fixtures through changing blue lights to warm lights, using the least amount of lighting possible, and shielding outdoor light fixtures. If you remember one thing about light pollution, McLean Evirothon hopes to share that light pollution is an environmental challenge that individuals and communities can address quickly, through implementing simple changes.

Bring your family and friends to the Purcellville Music and Arts Festival on Saturday, April 25 from noon to 7 p.m. rain or shine. This free, family-friendly event will be held at Fireman’s Field Park and inside the Bush Tabernacle Skating Rink at 250 South Nursery Avenue.

Enjoy a full day of live music and performances across multiple stages, along with an art exhibit, games, chalk art, and a variety of interactive activities. Browse offerings from local vendors featuring handcrafted goods, food, beverages, and more. There will be fun for all ages, including face painting, glitter tattoos, sidewalk chalk art, and t-shirt or tote bag decorating. Local non-profits will also be on-site sharing information and resources. Special activities will highlight and celebrate the 250th anniversary of America’s independence.

Ch/Art Fest Returns April 26 Featuring 25+ Local Artists, Food, and Community Celebration
The Ch/Art (Chevy Chase Art) Fest – the outdoor art fair that fills a bank parking lot with great art, food and music - will return on Sunday, April 26, bringing together more than 25 local artists for an afternoon celebrating creativity, community, and the vibrant arts culture of the neighborhood.
The festival, run by the Ch/Art organization that also presents the popular Ch/Art Art Walk every fall, will feature a diverse range of artwork - including painting, ceramics, textiles, photography, jewelry, and mixed media - offering visitors the chance to meet artists, learn about their creative processes, and purchase original work directly from makers.

“Events like this create space for artists and neighbors to connect,” said Erin Joshi, Ch/Art Board Chair, “The Ch/Art Fest is about celebrating creativity in all its forms and making art accessible within the community.”
The event is free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to come by, meet the artists, enjoy local food, and spend time exploring the work on display.

Register now for the 2026-27 school year! Serving families in our community since 1962, Redeemer Renaissance Preschool provides premiere early childhood education for children ages 1.5 - 5 years old. Classes for 2's, 3's, and 4's are offered for mornings and all day. Good Beginnings, a class for children and their caretaker, is offered for children 1.5 years - 2.5 years. Children learn and flourish as they wonder and learn, building a foundation to ensure their success through use of the Creative Curriculum, vetted by the Virginia Department of education. The curriculum is play-based and with nature-based components incorporated, promotes healthy development in children as they discover and explore in our outdoor natural play area.﻿﻿ Small classes led by experienced teachers can be found singing, jumping, building, making friends, painting, writing, counting, and observing chickens hatch as one of their STEM projects in the Learning Lab. Days when the weather is too cold or rainy find classes in the full-size indoor gym and fellowship hall. Children find joy in activities such as riding trikes, building with large manipulatives, designing and testing obstacle courses, running, throwing balls, and playing games. Families of preschoolers are partners with staff, engaging with their child's teachers and attending events for children and families scheduled throughout the school year.
