Community Services Board, Residential Parking on County Meeting Agenda

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meets Tuesday.

Parking in the county may get more difficult if the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approves an amendment to restrict parking in residential areas adjacent to commercial areas at its Tuesday meeting.

To combat the diminished parking space in some areas because of lax regulations on long-term parking, the board is looking at restricting parking on dozens of roadways.

Fines for violating these new regulations could increase to up to $100, according to the agenda for the board’s May 22 meeting. A public hearing on the issue is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 19.

During Tuesday’s meeting the board is also scheduled to authorize the Fairfax County Police Department to apply for grant funding from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The $285,000 grant would go toward an officer who specializes in human trafficking cases and who would be assigned to the Northern Virginia Human Trafficking Task Force.

Also on the agenda: A plan to close gaps in the Community Services Board (CSB) 2012 and 2013 budget.

The CSB, which helps residents who suffer from mental illness, substance abuse and intellectual challenges, notified the county in February of an $8.3 million potential hole in the fiscal year 2012 budget.

These shortfalls included $4 million for employee benefits; $1.8 for Medicaid reimbursement fees; $1.2 million for employment and day services for adults with disabilities; and $1 million for early intervention care for toddlers.

Former County Executive Anthony Griffin and the Board of Supervisors located $4 million during the third quarter review in March, but even with the adjustments, the CSB is expected to face a shortfall at the end of the year.

To deal with the gaps, new County Executive Ed Long is recommending funding for disabled high school graduates as well as a public review of the CSB’s plan to address the shortfalls.
