Crime Data: How Tysons Corner Compares With Other Malls

This is how Tysons Corner Center compares with other malls in the D.C. area on crime.

MCLEAN, VA -- Ever wondered which Northern Virginia malls are considered the most crime-ridden? ABC7 has investigated 25 malls in the D.C. area and came up with the top malls with the highest crime in a two-year period. All were from Virginia.

Tysons Corner Center tops the list, at least in terms of assaults. Over two years, the mall had 99 assaults. But the good news is, assaults were in decline during 2016.

Here are the top malls and the number of assaults they saw over two years.

  • Tysons Corner Center (Tysons): 99 assaults with decrease in 2016
  • Springfield Town Center (Springfield): 69 assaults with decrease in 2016
  • Potomac Mills (Woodbridge): 33 assaults with decrease in 2016
  • Fashion Centre at Pentagon City (Arlington): 30 assaults. Thefts have dropped by 31 percent.
  • Fair Oaks Mall (Fairfax): 26 assaults with decrease in 2016
  • Dulles Town Center (Sterling): 17 assaults with decrease in 2016
  • Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets (Leesburg): eight assaults but over 200 cases of shoplifting

Geoff Mason, senior property manager at Tysons Corner Center, told ABC7 in a statement, "Fairfax County PD is onsite at Tysons seven days per week and working closely with retailers and customers. This is a far greater level of coverage than most commercial destinations provide and this allows the police to respond far more promptly to any concern and as a result it also leads to more interactions."
