Democrats Raise Funds for 'Rip' Sullivan in McLean

Democrats gathered Tuesday night at Salona, a historic home in McLean where owners Dan and Karen DuVal welcomed supporters to a reception for Richard C. ”Rip” Sullivan, Jr., who is running for office.

The event was headlined by fellow Democrat Don Beyer, the nominee for Virginia’s 8th congressional District; Beyer faces Republican Micah Edmond in November. The winner will take the seat occupied by fellow Democrat, Congressman Jim Moran, the past 24 years. Moran announced his retirement from Congress in January.

Sullivan, a McLean attorney, fresh off a win July 6 in a Democratic caucus, is running in a special election for the 48th House District seat; he’ll face Republican David Foster in a special election Aug. 19. The seat became open after Del. Bob Brink announced he was leaving for a job with Gov. McAuliffe’s administration.

Sullivan and Foster face off Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. at a debate hosted by George Mason University at its Arlington campus. (If you plan to attend, click on the link for information on reserving a seat.)

More big names in Democratic circles in Virginia are coming out to help Sullivan before the election, with fundraisers scheduled with Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam, former Clinton advisor Paul Begala and Attorney General Mark Herring headlining receptions before Aug. 19.

Congressman Frank Wolf (R-10th) is headlining a fundraiser for Foster on Aug. 5 in Arlington.

In McLean, the 48th House of Delegates District includes precincts 302 Chesterbrook, 305 El Nido, 307 Haycock, 310 Kirby, 312 Longfellow, 314 McLean, 318 Westmoreland, 333 Salona #2, and a portion of Arlington County. See a list of all of the precincts, including those in Arlington County, here.
