Downed Trees, Wires, Outages Impact McLean, Falls Church Area

Dominion Energy is reporting thousands of outages in the McLean and Falls Church area after a thunderstorm late Wednesday.

MCLEAN, VA — A severe thunderstorm impacted the McLean and Falls Church areas Wednesday night, bringing downed trees and wires as well as power outages.

As of 9 a.m. Thursday, Dominion Energy's outage map shows thousands of outages in the two areas. At least 1,700 are without power in the Falls Church area north and south of Broad Street. In McLean, over 1,100 lost power in the area west of the Beltway and north of Dulles Toll Road. Another 1,300 have outages south of the Dolley Madison Boulevard and Old Dominion Drive intersection. Other outages can be found in scattered areas of McLean and Falls Church.

Outages can be reported to Dominion Energy at 1-866-366-4357.

Cleanup is ongoing after the storm. In the meantime, residents are urged to avoid downed wires. These downed wires can also be reported to Dominion Energy.

Downed trees on private property are the responsibility of the property owner. Downed trees on roads in Fairfax County should be reported to the Virginia Department of Transportation at 1-800-367-7623 or through VDOT’s online reporting form. Many sidewalks are also VDOT's responsibility, but there is a map showing who maintains sidewalks in Fairfax County.

For downed trees at Fairfax County Government buildings, contact 703-324-2055. For Fairfax County Park Authority property, contact 703-324-8594 or report online. For Fairfax County Public Schools property, contact 703-764-2429.

In the City of Falls Church, report downed trees on public property, such as streets, schools, parks or those that may damage public property to the Falls Church Police Department at 703-241-5050.

More strong storms are forecast for the region Thursday. The National Weather Service's Baltimore-Washington Office issued a hazardous weather outlook Thursday due to scattered severe storms with potential of damaging wind gusts, hail and isolated tornadoes in the afternoon and evening. Isolated flash flooding is also possible, forecasters say. Keep monitoring the NWS forecast in the event that a watch or warning is issued.
