Flooding Prompts Water Rescue, Long-Term Road Closure In McLean

Firefighters made water rescues as Fairfax County was impacted by flooding on roads.

MCLEAN, VA—Heavy rains resulted in road damage and a swift water rescue in McLean Monday morning, according to Fairfax County officials.

The swift water rescue involved two people trapped in a car on a flooded road in the 6500 block Old Dominion Drive. This block remained closed into the afternoon. As of noon, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue responded to 55 calls for swift water rescues in the county.

The flooding will also result in a long-term road closure. According to Fairfax County Police, the 1300 block of Kirby Road was damaged by flooding.

Other road closures in effect Monday are:

  • 1400 block of Waggaman Circle for downed tree
  • 6500 block of Old Dominion Drive for flooded road
  • North Albemarle Street/Chesterbrook Road for debris and flooding
  • Old Dominion Drive/Balls Hill Road for flooding

The flooding followed heavy rain within a short amount of time. Fairfax County was previously under a flash flood warning, with officials warning residents to hold off travel until conditions improved.

The NWS issued a flood warning through 6 p.m. Monday to replace the flash flood warning. "Although the threat of rapid rise life threatening flooding is diminishing, some flooding is likely to continue for the rest of the afternoon," the NWS report states.
