Macerich (NYSE: MAC) today announced that Tysons Tower – the 22-story property that is a key component of the company’s mixed-use urban expansion at Tysons Corner – has received AIA Northern Virginia’s 2015 Award of Excellence for Commercial Architecture, the company announced today in a news release.

The 1,200-member AIA Northern Virginia Chapter is part of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the voice of the architecture profession since 1857.

The AIA award is the third major industry honor for Tysons Tower, the office building designed by Gensler Architects, that also recently earned the 2014 Best New Office Development Award from the Washington Business Journal and a 2014 Award of Excellence from the Northern Virginia Chapter of NAIOP, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association.

“This is an extraordinary achievement for Tysons Corner Center as we celebrate the completion of our ambitious and highly successful mixed-use urban expansion – already one of the most lauded projects of its kind,” said Ed Coppola, president, Macerich. “By building premier office, residential and hotel elements around a top-performing super-regional mall, we have significantly enhanced the value of a unique and irreplaceable property and our company overall.”

“These awards of excellence for Tysons Tower underscore the success of the project and how well-received the development has been in the growing Northern Virginia market,” said Tim Steffan, senior vice president, Asset Management and Commercial Leasing, Macerich. “With incredible amenities and steps away from the region’s best shopping and dining, Tysons Tower is a landmark corporate setting in an optimal location where limited space remains available.”

Tysons Tower is already home to Intelsat, the world’s largest satellite provider, Deloitte, the global consulting firm, and multiple other corporate tenants. The building is more than 87 percent leased. VITA, the property’s luxury residential tower, opened in May 2015 and is currently 30 percent leased. VITA’s opening added to the momentum driven by the April debut of the property’s 300-room Hyatt Regency Hotel, which has experienced strong occupancy.

Tysons Corner Center Grand Finale and Summer Kick-off Celebration

Macerich marked the completion of its high-profile project at Tysons Corner with a concert headlined by singer/songwriter Gavin DeGraw. The special celebration was held outdoors at the Plaza, which will also be home to the center’s Summer Concert Series, sponsored by Maserati.

The Plaza’s 1.5-acre elevated green space connects Tysons Corner’s mall with the property’s new residential, office and hotel components. The Plaza also links to a dedicated stop on the Metro Silver Line.
