McLean Community Center Announces January 2020 Events

From MCC: The McLean Community Center (MCC) offers the following activities in January. Residents of the Center’s tax district, Small District 1A-Dranesville, are eligible for discounts on fees. The center is located at 1234 Ingleside Ave.

Wednesday, Jan. 1
McLean Community Center and its divisions, the Alden Theatre and the Old Firehouse Center, will be closed on Wednesday, Jan.1, for the New Year’s Day holiday.

Teens can join the Old Firehouse staff as they take a trip into the nation’s capital to watch all-star Bradley Beal and the rest of the Washington Wizards take on their NBA rival. A ticket to the game and a pre-game dinner are included in the fee.

MCC Governing Board Elections
Nominating Petitions Available
Tuesday, Jan. 21
The McLean Community Center is looking for district residents to serve on its Governing Board. The Board, which is composed of volunteers elected by the community, sets policy, approves budgets and provides general oversight for Center programs and facilities. Residents of Small District 1A-Dranesville who would like to run for a seat on the board, must obtain 10 signatures of endorsement from district residents. Nominating petitions are available at the Center beginning on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Midday Movies: Foreign-Language Films
Wednesday, Jan. 22, 1 p.m.

Come enjoy foreign films selected by The Alden staff. All movies are shown in the original language with English subtitles. These movies are chosen for adult audiences and may contain mature content, language and themes.

The Alden’s Youth Production Open Auditions for
“Dorothy Meets Alice or The Wizard of Wonderland”
Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 21 and 22, 7–9 p.m.
Students between the ages of 10 and 16 who live in the MCC tax district (Small District 1A-Dranesville) are eligible to audition. Rehearsals will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from late January through March. Performances will be held March 28-29 and April 4-5 at 2 p.m. in The Alden. To schedule an audition time, please email danielle.vanhook@fairfaxcounty.gov.

The Old Firehouse 5th and 6th Grader Party
Snow Ball
Friday, Jan. 24, 7-9 p.m.

$35/$25 MCC district residents. Preregistration is highly recommended.
The Old Firehouse 5th & 6th Grader parties are themed and decorated accordingly. Free catered food and beverages will be distributed to participants. Parties feature a DJ, open dance floor and a variety of activities.

Macdonald Scholarship Application Deadline
Friday, Jan. 24
Annually, MCC recognizes the hard work and talent of young performing artists through the James C. Macdonald Performing Arts Scholarship Competition. Following a preliminary round and final round of competition, prizes (1st - $1,200; 2nd - $800; and 3rd - $400) are awarded in each of four categories: dance, theater, instrumental music and vocal music. High school students who reside in the MCC tax district (Small District 1A-Dranesville) are eligible to apply.

Hiplet Ballerinas
Saturday, Jan. 25, 6 p.m.
$30/$20 MCC district residents
Hiplet™ fuses classical pointe technique with African, Latin, Hip-Hop and urban dance styles that are rooted in communities of color. It was specifically designed to make ballet accessible to all, by mixing it with current popular songs that will be familiar to audiences who don’t normally attend ballet performances.

$105/$85 MCC district residents, with own ski/snowboard equipment
It’s time to get out of the house and get on the slopes! The Old Firehouse’s annual skiing and snowboarding excursion is here. Ski or board rental, lift ticket, helmet and chartered transportation are included in the fee. If you have your own skis or snowboard, please contact the Old Firehouse at 703-448-8336 for the reduced charge.

Do you have a need for speed? Well grab your helmet and prepare to experience a thrill like no other at a state-of-the-art indoor go-karting facility. The cost of lunch and races are included in the fee. A signed waiver is required for participation.

“We Shall Overcome featuring Damien Sneed”
Thursday, Jan. 30, 7 p.m.

Inspired by the words and action of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “We Shall Overcome” showcases repertoire from across the African American music traditions that electrified generations of civil rights activists and defenders with interwoven spoken word from Dr. King’s recorded speeches.
