Q&A Series: Protective Padding While Squatting

Hello patch friends, this is the first of a Q&A series I am doing.

Strength Training Questions and Answers:

Is there a protective padding for neck and shoulder areas?

No, I actually do not recommend squat pads. Reason being, it puts the weight further away from your center of gravity/ mid-line.

Think about if you held a sack of potatoes. Would it be more difficult to hold is with your arm out or close to your body? It would be more difficult to hold it further away (distally) than closer in. This is the same reason I prefer to have people low bar squat (with the bar pulled low on their back) which causes your torso position to be a little more vertical- which is fine as long as the bar stays in a straight path over the middle of your foot. This is provided they can get their shoulders into position. If they have tight shoulders we may high bar or even safety bar squat while we work on flexibility.

Anyways...that's all not exactly what you asked....short answer is no...no squat pads...9.9/10 trainees get used to the mild discomfort after a one session...we go to the gym to get uncomfortable so we can move through life a little stronger and more comfortable on the whole.
