Summer Food Safety

Along with summer comes a multitude of outdoor activities: camping, hiking, picnicking, grilling, beach trips, etc. With all of this time spent outside, we often find ourselves preparing and eating more of our meals either outdoors or on the go. It’s important to keep the following guidelines in mind so that you can still enjoy eating in the outdoors without compromising your health.

  • Keep Your Produce Clean: Many of us like to enjoy the best in-season fruits and veggies throughout the summer, but we often forget the importance of washing them off before eating. When going on trips, always try to clean produce ahead of time, because access to a sink or even clean water could be scarce. It’s important to keep our hands clean before eating and handling food as well: never underestimate the power of sanitizing gel or wipes—you’ll be glad you brought them along! These simple steps are extremely easy ways to prevent foodborne illnesses.
  • Grilling & Meat Safety: When it comes to grilling, it’s crucial to take the proper precautions when handling meat and poultry in order to decrease the risk of food poisoning. The Food Network recommends keeping raw and cooked foods separate (as well as the utensils and dishes that you use for them)—particularly when packing for a picnic. Make sure that raw meats are packed in their own cooler and surrounded by ice. In order to be sure that grilled foods are cooked all the way through, use a meat thermometer rather than simply checking the color.
  • Keep Food in the Right Temperature Zone: If your summer meal is buffet style, it is important to remember to keep the hot foods hot and the cold foods cold, and all the foods out of the danger zone (40°F - 140°F). Chafing dishes, hot plates, and ice are great for keeping food at the proper temperature.

With a scorching summer ahead, you’ll want to avoid taking any risks when it comes to your health, and a great way to start is by following these food safety tips. Enjoy the picnics, barbecues, and grilling out with friends and family, but keep these tips in mind to ensure a safe and healthy time for everyone!
