MCLEAN, VA — The Treasure Shop in McLean announced it will close after 49 years in business due to the COVID-19 situation and increasing costs. The last day is June 30.

The boutique consignment shop, located in the Chesterbrook Shopping Center, is operated by the Navy Marine Coast Guard Residence Foundation. It has carried items such as decorative objects, paintings, jewelry, silver, china and furniture. Proceeds benefit the foundation and residents of Vinson Hall, the retirement community supported by the foundation. Vinson Hall was first opened as a retirement home for retired military officers and their families, but it transformed into the modern senior living community with independent living, assisted living, nursing care, long-term rehabilitation and memory support residences.

Treasure Shop dates back to 1971, when two Vinson Hall residents suggested a facility to see furnishings to other military personnal in the area, with funds benefiting residents. The Navy Officers’ Wives Club worked with the foundation and the Board of Trustees to open the shop.

It started out as an operation in an efficiency apartment at Vinson Hall with a cardboard box desk, two glass display cases from Washington Navy Yard and a card table. The shop was run by volunteers, with many being Vinson Hall residents. In May 2009, it moved to the current location at Chesterbrook Shopping Center.

"The shop’s success has been due to many volunteers, consignors and donors who have dedicated their time, talent and treasure these many years,” said Fran Mooney, the supervisor who has worked at the shop for five years. "We will be forever grateful for their tireless support and dedication."
