Virginia General Election 2017: How Fairfax County Voted
Fairfax County voters went for Ralph Northam in Tuesday's general election and approved a school bond referendum.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA—Fairfax County voters largely choose Democrat Ralph Northam for governor during the general election Tuesday, Nov. 7. Northam had a 36-point lead over Republican Ed Gillespie in Fairfax County. Northam led Gillespie overall in Fairfax County by 36 points. Northam won the county by a higher margin than Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who had a 22-point lead in 2013.
The Associated Press called the race for Northam at 8:12 p.m. Fairfax County chose the Democratic victors in three statewide races, including Justin Fairfax for lieutenant governor and Mark Herring for attorney general. Fairfax becomes the second African-American in state history to win a statewide office.
Virginia's gubernatorial race was one of the first statewide tests of voters' moods since the 2016 election of President Donald Trump. A Democratic loss would have been another blow to the party after 2016, while a Republican win could have all but guaranteed full party control in Richmond. The general election results set the stage for 2018 races, notably with Trump supporter Corey Stewart challenging Sen. Tim Kaine.
