Daily Baseball Update: 6/28

Historical Individual Seasons: Jimmy Foxx 1932
Stat Line: 58 HR, 169 RBI, .364 AVG, 3 SB.  Age 24.
Though he was only 24 years old, Foxx was in his eighth major league season and well established as one of the best players in the league, having won two World Series and thrice hitting 30 home runs.  In 1932, he took it to a whole new level, hitting 58 home runs, knocking in 169 RBI, and batting .364 to barely miss the Triple Crown.  His 58 home runs blew away 37 year old Babe Ruth's 41 and his 169 RBI blew away Lou Gehrig's and teammate Al Simmons' 151.  His average of .364 just missed Dale Alexander's .367, though Alexander had just 464 at bats and would not qualify under today's standards (In 1933, Foxx did win the Triple Crown despite having lower numbers in all three categories: 48 HR, 163 RBI, .356 AVG).  Aside from Triple Crown numbers, Foxx's .749 slugging percentage easily topped Babe Ruth's .661 while his 1.218 OPS set down Ruth's 1.150.  Foxx led the AL in runs scored at 151, and just missed tying Chuck Klein for the major league lead by one.  Foxx also walked 116 times, which was bettered only by Babe Ruth's 130.  Foxx's .469 on-base percentage was again only topped by Ruth's .489.  His 100 extra base hits led the AL and his 438 total bases led all of baseball.  After the season, Foxx won the AL MVP award with 75 points, beating Lou Gehrig's 50 points and Heinie Manush's 41.
