Dog Left In Hot Car At Oakton High School

The owner got a summons for leaving the dog in the truck.

OAKTON, VA—A pet owner was issued a summons for leaving his dog in a hot car Wednesday outside Oakton High School.

Around 2:15 p.m., security at the high school discovered the dog inside a truck parked outside. Animal protection police arrived and found the owner had locked the dog in the truck while he was in the school. Temperatures were around the 80s Wednesday afternoon.

Keith Allred, 53, of Idaho, was issued a summons for inadequate care of an animal. Police determined the dog was healthy and not injured.

Fairfax County Police urge residents to call 911 if they see a dog in a hot car. According to Virginia code, law enforcement officers, firefighters or animal control officers "who in good faith forcibly enters a motor vehicle in order to remove an unattended companion animal that is at risk of serious bodily injury or death" are not liable for property damage to the vehicle.
