Flint Hill Breaks Ground on New Middle School

The new space will house seventh- and eighth-grade students adjacent to the current Upper School Campus.

OAKTON, VA - On May 16, members of the Flint Hill community gathered at the School’s Upper School Campus for a groundbreaking for its newest facility, the Peterson Middle School. Preparations for the construction site began quickly in early May following as the School completed a $20 million fundraising campaign for the space. In addition to school leadership, students, donors, trustees and construction partners, neighbors from the surrounding community in Oakton were invited to attend the festivities.

The 200,000+ square foot Peterson Middle School will include 16 classrooms, an Innovation Hub with dedicated space for computer science, makers and robotics projects; an art studio; quiet study rooms and a large commons with cafeteria seating. A large terrace will serve as a space for students to spend down time as well as a community gathering space during athletics events. Scheduled to open in the fall of 2020, the building will serve as the new home for Flint Hill’s seventh- and eighth-grade students.

Flint Hill’s Headmaster John Thomas noted the role the new facility would play in supporting the School’s academic program.

“At Flint Hill, we teach a core curriculum — history, English, science, math. But we take very seriously what we layer on top of that: collaboration, creativity, critical problem solving, communication. The new building will facilitate that in every way.”

The building is being designed by Bowie Gridley Architects, which also designed Flint Hill’s Upper School Campus. The building’s construction is being managed by Whiting-Turner.
