Movie Screening of "Matt Shepard Is A Friend of Mine"

Free screening and discussion of award-winning movie about a gay student murdered in 1998.

In conjunction with the 2017 Season for Nonviolence, Unity of Fairfax will host an interfaith event at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 4 featuring the screening of the film Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine (2015). This award-winning, critically-acclaimed documentary explores the life and tragic death of Matthew Shepard, a gay student murdered in 1998, in Laramie, WY. The story of Matt Shepard's struggles is told through the personal lens of his friends, family and those who were close to him throughout the years.

2017 marks the 20th anniversary of The Gandhi-King Season for Nonviolence (SNV), an international 64-day campaign held in cities throughout the world. Founded in 1998 by Dr. Arun Gandhi and the Association for Global New Thought (AGNT), the January 30-April 4 campaign spans the memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Season teaches that every person can move the world forward in the direction of peace through daily nonviolent choices and actions.

The film will be followed by a discussion of where we have come from in terms of LGBTQ equality and protections since Matt’s death, what work is yet to be done, and how we might partner to be the change we wish to see in the world.
