Alexandria 9/11 Ceremony Planned On 21st Anniversary Of Terrorist Attacks

ALEXANDRIA, VA — On the 21st anniversary of 9/11, the City of Alexandria will hold a remembrance ceremony Sunday.

All are invited to attend the ceremony from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday at Market Square, 301 King Street, Alexandria. The ceremony will remember the victims, survivors and all those affected by the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Nearly 3,000 Americans were killed in the suicide attacks carried out by 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group Al-Qaeda. Many of the victims were killed in the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, and additional victims died in the attack on the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and the hijacked plane crash near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. There were 16 victims of the 9/11 attacks from Alexandria.

The ceremony will also honor those who risked their lives or gave up their lives to save others. First responders from the Alexandria were among those who responded to the attack on the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001.

Sunday's ceremony will feature remarks from Mayor Justin Wilson, Fire and EMS Chief Corey Smedley, Sheriff Sean Casey and Acting Assistant Chief of Police Dennis Andreas.

In case of inclement weather, the event will not be held.
