Alexandria Chamber of Commerce Announces Retirement of President/CEO John Long

Alexandria Chamber of Commerce President and CEO John T. Long III has announced that he is retiring from the Chamber. Long has been with the Alexandria Chamber since March 2012 and he retires after 25 years as an executive with Chambers of Commerce around the country, according to a news release from the Chamber.

Previously, Long had worked in similar positions at Chambers of Commerce in Florida, Maryland and Michigan.

In 2012, Long replaced Tina Leone, who left to head the Ballston business improvement district in Arlington.

Under Long’s leadership, the Alexandria Chamber has transformed into one of the largest and most active Chambers in the Washington Capital Region, while establishing a highly effective and energetic staff, according to the Chamber news release.

Long initiated a number of highly successful programs and events, including a Government Contracting Council, a Non Profit and Association Academy, and the highly successful Women’s Leadership Forum with the Alexandria Chamber Professional Women’s Network, which merged with the Chamber in 2012. Successful partnerships have been forged by Long with leading regional organizations, including George Mason University, Quantico/Belvoir Regional Business Alliance, the City of Alexandria and the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority. The Chamber has also developed a powerful new website and accompanying social media presence.

“I am proud of the accomplishments the Chamber has made over the past three years. It has been rewarding to work for the Chamber, with the supportive work of the Chamber Board, our many volunteers, and our professional and dedicated staff. I wish all of my friends and colleagues continued success,” stated Long.

“We thank John for his leadership and vision,” stated Board Chairman Walter Clarke. “His dedication, team building, and strategic planning helped to professionalize the Chamber and provide increased educational opportunities for our members and our community.”

The Board will now embark on a search for a permanent replacement as president and CEO. In the meantime, Chamber Finance and Operations Director Stanley Brinkley will manage the Chamber’s day-to-day operations. To assist with the transition, Long has agreed to remain available for consultation and advice.

According to Clarke, “We have a great team in place, and the Board has every confidence they will continue the outstanding work they have always done. I’m proud to lead this team of professionals as we transition to the next exciting chapter for the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce.”
