Alexandria's D-Day commemoration is among many planned around the country, including at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia. The small community lost 20 of the 32 soldiers who were sent to Normandy on June 6, 1944. The memorial opened in Bedford since it has the country's highest per-capita deaths from D-Day.
