Alexandria Residents Asked To Reduce Waste In Time Of Coronavirus

Three jurisdictions say an increase of trash since mid-March puts a strain on regional waste management.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Three Northern Virginia jurisdictions are asking for residents to reduce waste as regional increases were reported in the midst of the coronavirus crisis. The City of Alexandria, Arlington County and Fairfax County made the request due to an increase up to 40 percent in residential trash tonnage since mid-March.

Sanitation crews continue to collect trash and recycling with changes varying by jurisdiction and provider. In Alexandria, city collection schedules remain the same. Customers are asked to place trash in tied or sealed plastic bags inside the city-provided bins or carts; used wipes, tissues and paper towels should be in trash bags tied shut. Recycling materials should be placed in the blue city recycling bins or a paper bag.

The city's yard waste, bulk material and metal curbside collection have been suspended and the Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Collection Center is closed. Effective April 13, bags and bulk material outside city-provided carts will not be collected. Customers are asked to store bulk materials until normal operations resume. For customers without city-provided carts, trash must be in sealed or tied plastic bags; loose and bulk material won't be collected.
