Alexandria Man Tops Handcycle Finishers At Marine Corps Marathon

An Alexandria man was first in the handcycle category at Saturday's Marine Corps Marathon, one of the world's largest marathons.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — An Alexandria competitor was the top male finisher in the Marine Corps Marathon's Wheelchair/Handcycle event Saturday.

The 47th annual Marine Corps Marathon is one of the world's largest marathons, drawing runners from all U.S. states and over 50 countries. The 26.2-mile race starts on Route 110 between the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery, continues into Rosslyn and enters DC through Georgetown, then the National Mall. Participants return to Arlington, continue past the Pentagon, Crystal City and finish at the Marine Corps War Memorial.

. Kevin Hillery, 32, of Alexandria, was the top male handcycle finisher with a time of 1:19:25. He was followed by Andrew Hairston, 29, of Jacksonville, North Carolina with a time of 1:35:26 in the handcycle/wheelchair category and Dennis McGorty, 52, of Westfield, New Jersey with 1:35:49.

The overall Marine Corps Marathon first place runner was Kyle King, 33, of Yucca Valley, California with a time of 2:19:19. King, a Marine who is part of the All-Marine Running Team, had won the Marine Corps Historic Half in May.

The top female finisher was Chelsea Baker, 32, of Stroud, United Kingdom with a time of 2:42:38. Baker had been part of the Royal Navy Team in the Challenge Cup Competition, a friendly competition involving the Royal Marines and Royal Navy versus the U.S. Marine Corps All-Marine Running Team.
