Alexandria School Board Special Election: Beaty Is Projected Winner

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Tim Beaty is the projected winner over Gina Baum in the special election to fill an Alexandria City School Board seat Tuesday.

Voters in School Board District A could vote in the special election, held to fill one seat after Willie Bailey resigned in November. School Board District A has three representatives.

The candidates in the special election are Gina Baum, a parent who has served on Alexandria’s Parks and Rec Commission and Waterfront Commission, and Tim Beaty, a parent, substitute teacher and retired global strategies director for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Beaty received endorsements from the Education Association of Alexandria, School Board members Jacinta Greene and Michelle Rief, City Council members Canek Aguirre, Sarah Bagley, Alyia Gaskins and Kirk McPike, Sheriff Sean Casey and the Northern Virginia AFL-CIO.

With all precincts reporting but without provisional ballots counted, Beaty has 56.29 percent of votes, and Baum has 42.64 percent.

"Congrats to @tjbeaty for his election to the Alexandria School Board in yesterday’s special election," Mayor Justin Wilson tweeted. "Thanks to both Tim and Gina for offering to serve. We are grateful for our Registrar’s Office and our faithful election officers for making it happen on a moment’s notice!"

Only City of Alexandria voters in School Board District A could cast a ballot in the special election. School Board District A includes the following precincts: 101 Old Town North (formerly Ladrey), 102 City Hall, 103 Lyles Crouch School, 104 Durant Center, 105 Lee Center, 106 Cora Kelly - "Chick" Armstrong Center, 107 Mount Vernon Center, 108 George Washington School, 109 Fire Dept. Headquarters, 110 Charles Houston Center and 111 Potomac Yard.

Alexandria's School Board has nine members, with three each from Districts A, B and C. The members serve three-year terms, and all are up for election in November 2024.
