Alexandria Schools Make Weather Decision For Jan 8

Alexandria City Public Schools made the decision due to anticipated winter weather in the afternoon.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Alexandria City Public Schools will have an early release on Monday, Jan. 8 due to anticipated winter weather in the afternoon.

All schools will close two hours earlier than usual. Afternoon activities at the schools are cancelled. Morning preschool will follow a normal schedule, while afternoon preschool is cancelled. John Adams Elementary School had already been closed throughout the day due to heating issues.

Emergency and essential staff will work as scheduled, while non-administrative licensed staff, paraprofessionals and school security officers can be released by the principal after students are dismissed. Bus drivers report two hours earlier than usual. Night staff report at normal time or take leave with supervisors' approval.

Alexandria and the surrounding area are under a winter weather advisory beginning at 3 p.m. through 9 p.m. The Monday forecast calls for a wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet. Commuters should be aware of slippery conditions on sidewalks, roads and bridges.

The forecast indicates normal rain could continue at night. Tuesday is expected to thaw out the area with sunny skies and a high of 45.

The latest round of winter weather comes after the "bomb cyclone" brought a coat of snow and extended wind chills. The Alexandria school district cancelled classes Thursday, Jan. 4 and delayed school Friday, Jan. 5. Alexandria received less than an inch of snow from the storm but faced wind chills sometimes dipping into the negatives.
