Alexandria's Fifth Annual D-Day Commemoration Ceremony Takes Place Saturday

United States Army Color Guard and Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps will perform.

The Alexandria-Caen Sister Cities Committee will remember the sacrifice of American troops and celebrate its special connection with its Sister City of Caen, France with two events commemorating the 71st anniversary of the D-Day invasions of Normandy.

On Thursday, June 4 at 7 p.m. at the Lyceum, the committee will host a lecture titled “June 6, 1944: The Beginning of the End” with the Senior Historian to the Secretary of Defense, LTC (R) Tom Christianson. A wine and dessert reception will follow. RSVP at ddaylecture2015.eventbrite.com.

Alexandria’s fifth annual D-Day Commemoration event will take place on Market Square in Old Town Alexandria on Saturday, June 6, from 2:30-5 p.m. Beginning with music and swing dancing with the Alexandria Citizens Band Swing Band at 2:30 p.m., a formal remembrance ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m. with the U.S. Army Color Guard and a 12-man Old Guard Fife and DrumCorps performance.

Visitors will also be able to meet and learn from WWII re-enactors and participate in a children’s scavenger hunt. Children are encouraged to attend and all activities are free.
