Seniors Give Back to Capital Caring, Local Hospice Provider

Vivian Brown, a senior citizen who regularly spends time at Gum Springs Community Center, understands the value of hospice care. Both of her children died in hospice care and today she carries on their memory by supporting the hospice cause, which seeks to offer comfort and dignity to those facing serious illnesses when a cure is no longer in sight.

This year Ms. Brown decided to do something special for Capital Caring, one of the nations's leading nonprofit hospices. She organized a group of knitters at the Community Center, and together, they produced 40 hats, seven blankets and a handful of scarves for babies and infants who have serious illnesses.

"I realized what hospice had done for me when my children were sick and I wanted to give back," says Brown. "It is in giving that we receive. That is what I've learned."

This week, Brown presented Capital Caring's Alexandria-based General Manager, Altonia Garrett, with beautiful, hand crafted gifts along with fellow knitters, Estelle Bowman, Sheila Randolph, and Barbara Sellier. Gum Springs staff members Amie Williams and Diane Braxton helped facilitate the process.

Together, this team of generous women celebrated weeks worth of compassionate work--all in the name of helping babies and their families in a time of distress. Capital Caring is most grateful. For more information, visit: www.capitalcaring.org
