Plans Detailed For Restaurant, Market On Alexandria Waterfront
The Mill, a restaurant and market concept, has applied to open in a historic warehouse on the Alexandria waterfront.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — A special use permit application for a Southern-style market and kitchen in a historic warehouse has gone to the Alexandria Planning Commission. The hearing is set for Thursday, Nov. 7.
The southern kitchen and market called The Mill was announced earlier this year after Murray Bonitt of Bonitt Builders purchased the warehouse from Robinson Landing's developer. The warehouse is located at 10 Duke Street near the waterfront.
The application details plans for different floors of The Mill. The first floor will have a tavern feel with an extensive, casual menu. Food options could include crab cake sandwiches, clam chowder, pimento cheese sandwiches, fried green tomatoes, oyster po'boy, Virginia craft beers and more. The rebuilt space will feature original brick walls and original reclaimed beams turned into table tops, bar tops and wall cladding.

The first floor rear will host the market. Shoppers can expect fresh beignets, breakfast sandwiches, croissants, pastries, coffee, boxed lunches, packaged heat-and-eat meals, wine, beer and other to-go food and beverages.
The second floor will have indoor dining and two outdoor balconies on the front and river sides. The indoor portion will have an open kitchen with seating, a communal table and sofas with a fireplace. Food will include crab cakes, Caesar salad with fried oysters, pimento cheese fritters, marinated swordfish, BBQ shrimp over cheese grits and more.

The basement level will feature quick comfort food such as burgers, lobster and crab corndogs, curly fries, BBQ brisket sandwiches and more. The space will be complete with a jukebox and pool table.
The warehouse had previously been a mess house and commissary for the Union Army during the Civil War. It's one of the last remaining historic warehouses on the Alexandria waterfront.
The Mill's team previously announced an estimated opening date of October 2020.
