Layoffs Up 50 Percent In VA This Summer, Hundreds To Lose Jobs In August

More than 430 people are going to lose their jobs in Virginia over the month of August, according to data from the state’s workforce development agency.

Nearly 3,000 people have lost their jobs since the beginning of summer, June 21, an increase of more than 50 percent compared to last year and more than triple the number for the same period in 2024.

Four hundred thirty-three people will lose their jobs between August 1 and August 31, 2026, and a total of 2,899 will have lost their jobs between June 21 and August 31, according to current data from Virginia’s Department of Workforce Development, more than 52 percent more than in the same period last year.

In 2025, the total number of jobs lost in the same summer period was 1,907. In 2024, the total number of job losses between June 21 and August 31 was 773.

To date in 2026, there have been 6,102 job losses announced in the state, about 1,000 more than in the same period last year, when the figure was 5,123, a 20 percent year-on-year increase.

Staffing company, store closures drove layoffs in July

More than 1,600 jobs were lost in the state in July.

Virginia's unemployment rate sits at 3.8 percent, according to the latest available data. The national unemployment rate is at 4.3 percent.

NoVA still reeling from federal budget cuts

The Washington Metropolitan Region lost more than 100,000 jobs over the past year, while the rest of the country gained slightly, according to data released by the Metropolitan Council of Governments in July.

The Washington metropolitan area has a higher concentration of federal employment than any other region in the country. Job losses have been felt acutely in the region, particularly the wave of layoffs triggered by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) budget cuts.

The number of unemployed people in Northern Virginia has fluctuated since the start of the year, with a slight uptick between April and May, from 46,028 to 47,700, according to the Northern Virginia Regional Commission.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, or WARN, requires employers with 100 or more employees to provide 60 days’ advance written notice of plant closings or mass layoffs.
