The Art of the Book for September’s Second Thursday at the Torpedo Factory Art Center
As kids head back to school, the Torpedo Factory Art Center will be hitting the books, too.

As kids head back to school, the Torpedo Factory Art Center will be hitting the books, too. The Art of the Book is the theme of this month’s Second Thursday Art night on Thursday, September 8; 6 – 9 pm. The evening features live music, hands-on bookmaking, two readings, a writing workshop, and gallery receptions.

- 6:15 – 7:15 pm; 7:30 – 8:30 pm
- Live folk-rock music with Hearts & Spades.

- In Target Gallery (Studio 2), D.C.-based Curator Kayleigh Bryant-Greenwell will speak about the work included in the new exhibition, A (Mis)Perceived Physique: Bodyscapes by Three Women Artists. The show featured work that use the female body to explore issues of equity, power, politics, and memory.
- Danielle Smith (Studio 12) leads a writing workshop in the Post-Graduate Residency Studio to engage people, especially girls, in painting, writing, and esteem development. Registration is encouraged.

- In the New Project Studio (Studio 8), Author and journalist Glen Finland reads from her memoir, Next Stop, about raising a son with autism. A selection of short films will be screening in the New Project Studio as part of the 5th Annual ReelAbilities Film Festival, powered by the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia (JCCNV).

- The Art League (Studio 21) hosts openings for Michael Fischerkeller: The Art of Politics, featuring commentary on today’s political, economic, and social issues, and September’s Open Exhibit, which was juried by artist Amy Klainer.
- 8 pm
- Lisa Schumaier (Studio 16) hosts poet Sass Brown for a reading from USA-1000. The cover of her award-winning collection features Schumaier’s work.
- Throughout the Evening
- Visiting artists Hannah Nees (Studio 328) teaches visitors to create handmade books on the 3rd floor landing. She’ll be assisted by players from A Dream Within a Dream: Madness.
- Alison Sigethy (Studio 307) transforms her space into Edgar Allen Poe’s study for the forthcoming Through the 4th Wall production of A Dream Within a Dream: Madness. Visitors are encouraged to spend time with Poe and his books.
- The Alexandria Archaeology Museum (Studio 327) stays open late to welcome visitors to see artifacts that have been uncovered in Alexandria, including the ship that was recently unearthed on Union Street.
