Book Talk and Beer Tasting

Join Garrett Peck and Portner’s Brewhouse for a beer-and-book double header as we celebrate Garrett’s sixth book, Walt Whitman in Washington, D.C.: The Civil War and America’s Great Poet. Walt not only made an estimated 600 hospital visits for wounded soldiers during the decade in DC, but he also especially loved lager beer, and the talk will include a beer tasting compliments of Portner Brewhouse. For those who can stay a bit longer, Peck will lead a short walking tour of the historic Andrew Wales Brewery sites in Old Town. Wales was the very first brewer in Alexandria and DC (1770 - 1798), and one of his brewing sites is the now the courtyard behind the Athenaeum along Wales Alley.
