Torpedo Factory Art Center’s Target Gallery presents In the Flesh 3, a returning exhibition that focuses on the human as its subject. This exhibition exceeds its skin-deep title as a show comprised of contemporary figurative art produced by 21 artists, chosen by Dr. Jamie Smith, and given life by Karen Reedy Dance. To explore the intricacies of humanity, artists from around the country produced work ranging in all media that spans from a video of an autopsied leather recliner that literally goes deep to realistic renderings of the human figure that gives a more light-hearted comprehension of the complex body. Juror, Dr. Jamie Smith, curator and partner of Conner Contemporary in Washington DC and Co-Director of (e)merge Art Fair, looked past the tight-skinned and the wrinkly to generate an exhibition that “begs interpretation” as noted by David Sachs, Alexandria Times writer.

To further delve into the understanding of the subtleties of gesture, movement, and expression of the human body, Karen Reedy Dance is collaborating with Target Gallery for the third time and creating performance art inspired by the In the Flesh 3 exhibition and artist John Singer Sargent’s painting Madame X, which will be performed during the opening reception. Sargent’s Madame X, which eliminated any prospect for the artist and the sitter for its suggestive and provocative nature, and In the Flesh 3 imagery will be transferred from canvas to actual dancer Constance Dinapoli in a solo dance performance choreographed by Karla Wolfangle of Karen Reedy Dance.
To see how these artists “reflect our humanity in their art,” please join us June 9th from 6 - 8pm for the opening reception with a juror talk by Dr. Jamie Smith at 7pm and a special dance performance by Karen Reedy Dance at 8pm.
Target Gallery, national exhibition space of the Torpedo Factory Art Center, is located on the waterfront in Old Town Alexandria. Gallery is open daily 10-6pm and until 9pm on Thursdays. Entire exhibition is online at www.torpedofactory.org/target.
