Local Artist Captures Capital's Iconic Landscape
Through August 6, The Art League Gallery's solo room is home to Cecily Corcoran's paintings of the DC area from the perspective of someone who lives, commutes, and paints in the region.
This month, ’s solo room is home to Cecily Corcoran’s paintings of the DC area. The exhibit’s name, “,” is Latin for “a sense of place.” As someone who lives, commutes, and paints in the region, Corcoran captures familiar sights at different times, in different moods and lights.
“Genius Loci” is on view through August 6 in The Art League Gallery, on the first floor of the Torpedo Factory Art Center.
Corcoran's cityscapes find the beauty and nuance in the roads and spaces we frequent, asking commuters to pause and take a fresh look at the sights they think they know. Click here to see more images of her work.

“I want my viewers to remember to take a moment to view the environs and see the beauty that I see,” she says. “I want them to notice that Washington is a dynamic city on clear, blue days, and it softens to a hush on monochromatic, overcast days.”
Corcoran took her first classes at as a teenager and currently teaches Art Fun-damentals there.

The opening reception and meet-the-artist for “Genius Loci” will be Thursday, July 12, at 6:30 pm. Cecily Corcoran will also give a free artist demonstration in the gallery on Sunday, July 22, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.
The Art League Gallery showcases work by local artists in monthly group and solo exhibits. The Art League School offers instruction in the fine arts and fine crafts for artists of every skill level, starting at age five.
