Bridge Over I-395 Rehabilitation Completed In Alexandria: VDOT
Work has been completed on King Street over I-395, including bridge repairs and pedestrian improvements.

ALEXANDRIA, VA —The project to rehabilitate the King Street bridge over Interstate 395 has been completed in Alexandria, the Virginia Department of Transportation announced Wednesday.
The project covered the King Street bridge over I-395 as well as a half-mile of King Street. Bridge work included repairing and resurfacing the concrete bridge deck, repairing piers, abutments and bearings, painting steel beams and adding safety fences to the parapet walls. VDOT also repaired the King Street pavement adjacent to the bridge, replaced the chain link fence along eastbound King Street near Menokin Drive, and upgraded roadway lighting.
Pedestrian improvements included widening the King Street median sidewalk from 4 to 8 feet between 30th Street South and Menokin Drive and centering the median sidewalk. A pedestrian hybrid beacon crossing was added at westbound King Street and 30th Street south. Accessible Pedestrian Signal crossings and ADA curb ramp upgrades were installed at King Street and Park Drive as well as eastbound King Street and Menokin Drive.

The project was designed to improve pedestrian access and safety as well extend the bridge life and give a smoother ride over the bridge. The bridge dates back to 1970. Based on 2019 data, this area of King Street sees 43,000 vehicles a day, and I-395 averages about 209,000 per day. The project cost $13 million with federal and state funding.
