City Attorney Applications Accepted Amid Incumbent's Plan To Retire
A search for a new city attorney is underway as Joanna Anderson plans to retire when a replacement is named.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Applications are being accepted for the Alexandria city attorney to replace Joanna Anderson, the retiring incumbent.
Anderson announced in June she would retire by the end of 2023 as a new city attorney is appointed. She was appointed on Oct. 23, 2018, becoming the first woman in the position after serving as acting city attorney.
The search is being done through executive search firm Polihire. According to the job description, the city attorney serves as the City of Alexandria's legal advisor, providing legal advice to City Council, the city manager and various boards, commissions and city departments. The city attorney drafts ordinances, contracts, deeds, leases and other legal papers, represents the city in civil court, handles Freedom of Information Act public records requests, and is an adjudicator for parking ticket disputes.

Applicants must have a juris doctor degree, which is needed to be a lawyer. A salary for the full-time position is not listed in the job posting.
