Coastal Flooding Hits Old Town Alexandria Amid Storm

Strong winds and coastal flooding are impacting Alexandria Tuesday night as a storm moves through the region.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Tidal flooding is one impact of the storm moving through Alexandria Tuesday evening into the night.

The city government said residents and businesses at the King and Union Street intersection as well as lower King Street, lower Prince Street and Strand Street should expect coastal flooding. Alexandria Police said road closures are impacting the Strand due to rising water, and Union Street is closed between Prince and Cameron Streets. A Fox5 reporter in Old Town recorded rising floodwaters along lower King Street and gusty winds.

A coastal flood warning is in effect through 10 a.m. Wednesday on the shoreline of Alexandria, according to the National Weather Service. Forecaster expect one to two feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas. City government says the tidal flooding along the Potomac River could reach about 5 feet by 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The city has deployed public works crews to respond to debris removal and traffic signal outages.

According to the city government, "widespread rainfall and strong winds with gusts up to 55 mph" will continue Tuesday evening.
