Coronavirus Cases Up By 1,331 In Virginia, Positive Rate Below 5%
The southwest region had the most new cases on Thursday and has the highest positive average of tests.
VIRGINIA — On Thursday, the Virginia Department of Health reported 1,331 additional coronavirus cases, bringing the cumulative total to 162,941 cases. The seven-day average of positive PCR tests remains below 5 percent for the state as a whole.
There were seven new deaths reported on Thursday, and the latest cumulative death count is 3,388. For a more accurate picture of deaths, residents can look at VDH's deaths by date on the death certificate data. Data may be incomplete for recent weeks, but so far the numbers look higher in the earlier months of the pandemic. The peak seven-day average of deaths by date was 39.7 on May 5.
Cumulative hospitalizations stand at 11,704, but VDH also tracks numbers of current patients. There are currently 1,009 beds occupied by COVID-19 patients. That includes 239 in the central region, 237 in the northern region, 208 in the southwest region, 196 in the eastern region and 129 in the northwest region.

According to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association, there are 104 COVID-19 patients on ventilators and 220 in the intensive care units. Ventilator use among all hospital patients is at 22 percent of capacity, while ICU occupancy stands at 82 percent. No hospitals are reporting difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment or other medical supplies in the next 72 hours.
Thursday's 1,331 new cases include 347 in the southwest region, 314 in the northern region, 272 in the central region, 217 in the eastern region, and 181 in the northwest region. Across Virginia, the total number of cases per 100,000 people in the last 14 days is 166.9.

As for the positive rate of PCR tests, the latest statewide seven-day average is 4.7 percent on Oct. 11. Regions in the 4-percent range are the central region (4.6 percent), northwest region (4.5 percent) northern region (4.2 percent) and eastern region (4 percent). The southwest region's average is 6.8 percent.
Statewide, 2,326,802 PCR tests have been completed, an increase of 22,433 from Wednesday. To find testing locations and testing events, visit the VDH website.

- Alexandria: 4,077 cases, 324 hospitalizations, 73 deaths; increase of 20 cases and one hospitalization
- Arlington County: 4,278 cases, 518 hospitalizations, 152 deaths; increase of 28 cases
- Fairfax County: 22,340 cases, 2,201 hospitalizations, 600 deaths; increase of 65 cases, three hospitalizations and one death
- Fairfax City: 145 cases, 13 hospitalizations, eight deaths; no changes
- Falls Church: 75 cases, 13 hospitalizations, seven deaths; no changes
- Loudoun County: 7,417 cases, 459 hospitalizations, 129 deaths; increase of 116 cases, seven hospitalizations and one death
- Manassas: 2,004 cases, 131 hospitalizations, 25 deaths; increase of six cases
- Manassas Park: 628 cases, 56 hospitalizations, eight deaths; no changes
- Prince William County: 13,390 cases, 957 hospitalizations, 216 deaths; increase of 79 cases and five hospitalizations
- Fredericksburg: 568 cases, 51 hospitalizations, five deaths; three cases removed, increase of one hospitalization
- Spotsylvania County: 2,298 cases, 142 hospitalizations, 46 deaths; increase of 17 cases and two hospitalizations
- Stafford County: 2,230 cases, 168 hospitalizations, 19 deaths; increase of 13 cases and one hospitalization
