Council Rules Out Real Estate, Personal Property Tax Hikes
Alexandria's real estate tax could stay the same or be lower next fiscal year.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—On Wednesday, Alexandria City Council voted to not increase the real estate or personal property tax rates. The current real estate tax is $1.13 per $100 in assessed value and the personal property tax is $5 per $100 in assessed value.
The council made the vote as it considers next year's budget. The council will set the final real estate tax rate on May 3.
Despite no expected tax increases, the proposed budget allocates a $970K increase for the operating budget, a $10.1 million increase for Alexandria City Public Schools operations and debt service and $101.7 million more for school facility needs in the CIP, fully funding the district's requests.

Meanwhile the sewer fee could increase from $1.82 to $2.28 as the city remediates its combined sewer systems by mid-2025. The fix will mitigate the raw sewage flow into the Potomac River. No changes are proposed for the stormwater and refuse collection fees. Alexandria's $1.13 per $100 real estate tax is on par with neighboring Fairfax County, where a 2.5 cent increase is proposed for the next fiscal year. It is higher than Arlington County's $1.006 and and lower than the City of Falls Church's $1.33.
