Dead Cockroaches, Mouse: Old Town Alexandria Restaurant Violations

ALEXANDRIA, VA—The City of Alexandria regularly conducts health inspections for local restaurants. The frequency of inspections on the type of food served and how it is prepared.

“In our experience, it is unrealistic to expect that a complex, full-service food operation can routinely avoid any violations,” states the Virginia Department of Health’s website.

Here are some of the violations around Alexandria from recent inspections in June. Among the violations are dead cockroaches and mice in the basement at Sangjun Thai Restaurant. It was a repeat violation. In other news, Union Street Public House made a comeback in a follow-up inspection after having 26 violations earlier in June.

violations: employee eating in food prep area, food stored on/near floor, foods cold holding at improper temperatures, raw-undercooked items on menu without disclosure, prep refrigerator not operating properly

Fontaine Caffe and Creperie: 119 S. Royal St, Alexandria, VA 22314, last inspection: June 28

violations: improper employee handwashing, food handling without gloves

Ichiban Sushi House: 211 King St, Alexandria, VA 22314, last inspection: June 21

violations: employee not washing hands after activities that could contaminate food, handwashing in food prep sink, open drinking containers in food prep area, employees without hair restraints, food handling without gloves, potential cross contamination of foods,unlabeled food containers, food stored on/near floor, foods not reheated to sufficient temperature to eliminate pathogenic bacteria, improper method of thawing chicken, foods not dated or discarded within 24 hours, utensil not cleaned properly

violations: employees not able to demonstrate procedures responding to bodily fluids, uncovered food, food bins not labeled, refrigerators not operating properly, gaskets on food prep coolers with debris build up, pans in oven have grease build up, dead cockroaches and mouse on glue board in basement, baseboards in need of cleaning

Union Street Public House: 121 S. Union St, Alexandria, VA 22314, last inspection: June 26

violations: raw-undercooked items on menu without disclosure, refrigerator not operating properly (corrected) smoker with debris buildup (corrected) popcorn machine not cleaned each day (corrected)
