Driver Leads Officers on Midnight Foot Chase at Landmark Mall Parking Lot: Police

Driver struck mailbox + trash can, attempted to ram cruiser, and struck a curb causing a flat tire before stopping at mall, police said.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — A driver led police on a 2.5-mile chase Tuesday night that ended in the parking lot at Alexandria’s Landmark Mall, according to Fairfax County Police.

The chase started at Backlick Road and Hechinger Drive in Springfield around midnight, according to Fairfax County Police.

An officer observed a vehicle with expired license plates and defective equipment, police said. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but police said the driver fled and a pursuit was initiated.

The suspect vehicle struck a mailbox and a trash can before attempting to ram a police cruiser, according to FCPD. The pursuit continued until the suspect vehicle struck a curb on the ramp from I395 to Duke Street, causing a flat tire, police said.

The suspect vehicle pulled into the parking lot of Landmark Mall and the driver and passenger bailed out and attempted to flee on foot, according to police.

They were apprehended a short distance away. There were no injuries.

Jamal Herbert, 29, of Washington, D.C. was charged with DWI, speed to elude, driving on a suspended license, and assault on a law enforcement officer. The passenger was released at the scene.
