Dashing to the Show: the Clay Sleigh

A sleigh of clay has kept the elves at Scope Gallery busy as they present handmade holiday pre...sents for you and yours.

The workshop has produced glossy high-fire pottery, stunning decorative vessels and artisan holiday ornaments. Buddy the Elf has gotten muddy this year. Creative minds under striped stocking caps have created vases for flowers, serving dishes for salad, bowls for berries and mugs for Santa's milk. Dreidels aren't the only things made out of clay.

Jingle someone's bells with an artistic teaset, pitfired vase with a marbled finish or textured trinket box. Stuff those stockings with ceramic earrings and pendants or teabowls. No one will be frosty about a handmade sake set or woodfired ladle.

Glassy high-fire glazes coat tableware in jeweled colors, shinier than Rudoph's nose. Creatures are indeed stirring as sculptural bears, incised birds and painted bunnies populate the gallery shelves. Bowls to fill with jolly jelly can be crystalline-glazed porcelain. Both the naughty and nice appreciate the black and white of raku and horsehair pottery. And ornaments are handpainted with hometown creativity.

Yule love these gifts made with artistic elfin magic from the kilns' high fires.

The Kiln Club show runs from December 5 to January 5; Scope Gallery hours are Monday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., open until 9 p.m. on Thursdays; closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. The gallery is located at 105 North Union Street, ground floor Studio 19, Alexandria, Va. 22314.
