Clay artists are coming out of their shells, showing the best of the nest at the Kiln Club Annual Show at Scope Gallery in the Torpedo Factory Art Center.
Spring is here, as plucky artists answer the caw of creativity, producing a fine flock of spectacular bowls, vessels and vases. Graceful forms will go over easy with sunny sides and a compelling scramble of textures. Dramatic vessels take wing, ideas incubate and sculptures sing an earthy melody. The hunt is on for ceramic treasures, showcasing the leader of the peck in this juried show and sale event.
Novie Trump, a Northern Virginia sculptor, will judge the show, determining first through third place and juror's award pieces and recognition for sculpture, raku and carved, pierced or stamped functional ware. Artists are awarded cash prizes at the April 12 reception.
Trump, influenced by a background in archeology, is best known for her reliquary displays centered around primitive ceramic forms including eggs, bones and other natural objects.
The Kiln Club show runs from April 2 to 29 with a reception with awards presentation on April 12 from 6:30 to 9 p.m.; Scope Gallery hours are Monday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with Thursdays open until 9 p.m. and will be closed on Easter, April 8. The gallery is located at 105 North Union Street, ground floor Studio 19, Alexandria, VA. 22314.
