Spooky shapes, scary function in Scope Gallery's Fall forms
Whether it be a princess, a pumpkin or a contrary black cat, Scope Gallery has handmade wares for any wolf at Torpedo Factory Art Center.
"Form and Function" are the specters of ceramics this month. No one can say 'Boo!' to artful shapes and silhouettes in clay that can be used for dining or display.
The potters of the Kiln Club are scaring up creativity, haunting lines, curves and shapes. Dramatic raku centerpieces with gnarled twig handles, oxblood glazewares and cauldrons for soup or supper are meant to bewitch.
Mummy dearest might cackle over an angular, dramatic woodfired vase. Frankenstein would be green with envy over classic Celadon-glazed tableware, while a crimson bowl in glossy red would please the Devil.
Form is the trick and the treat for sculptural work. Skeletal pieces these are not, with full-bodied women in elegant repose, contemplative stately figures and a chorus-line of goulish and sniggering faces.
Tableware spiderwebbed with patterns of crackled glaze are scary-good. Midnight designs in raku and shadowy, smokey pitfired pottery bring dark longing. Harry would like these potters.
The Kiln Club show runs from October 4 to 30; Scope Gallery hours are Monday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., open until 9 p.m. on Thursdays.
