Art and emotion go hand in hand as potters create and coax clayworks to inspire at the Torpedo Factory Art Center's Scope Gallery.
"Meditation & Inspiration" not only showcases work of clay artisans, but reveals in writing what goes on behind within potters' creative minds, through their hands and into their work. Bodies of work are inspired from music to textiles to travels. Forms come from animals to ancient art. Colors echo the elements. Statues exude feeling and reflect life introspection.
While water speaks to one artist, earth inspires another. Meditate on an undulating sculptural wave or among the shades of a desert landscape. Go Zen with classical Eastern patterns and raku-fired work. Feel weightless with floating florals and tune into the natural world with leaf embossed
vases.
The touch of one potter results in graceful, organic forms while another favors edgy geometric angles. Glazed exteriors show night starbursts while another looks like a lunar landscape. While form inspires one potter, another gets enlightened from surface treatments. Stark or bright, bold or light, thought behind choices add dimension.
The human side of the kiln is interesting when opened.
The Ceramic Guild is an organization of over 40 juried Washington D.C. area artists working in the clay medium. Organization members exhibit themed shows every other month at the artist-run cooperative Scope Gallery in
