Laura Clerici is a Byzantine iconographer who has been studying the process of "writing" an icon (as it is called in the Orthodox tradition) for over 10 years.
The Orthodox tradition of "writing" an icon involves gilding with gold leaf and creating tempera paints by mixing a medium of egg yolk and wine with dry pigments such as cinnabar, lead white, indigo and ocher. Color is applied in six to eight layers on a wooden board, which has been prepared with cloth and multiple layers of gesso. The result is rich, deeply saturated, colorful image.
Dennis Crayon works in oils on both canvas and panels, Crayon uses color and position to convey Modernist composition with a classical painting technique. Each of his paintings features extreme attention to detail, especially the effect of light as it hits objects.
