This exhibition is a culmination of work from a paper-making workshop held at the art center as a collaborative effort between Peace Paper facilitators, Torpedo Factory members, art therapists, veterans and trauma survivors. This workshop and exhibition was developed as a collaborative effort between  Peace Paper and the Torpedo Factory Art Center's Target Gallery as part of our  Art in Public Spaces Program. Workshop participants will be comprised of Torpedo Factory artists as well as survivors of trauma – including war veterans, cancer survivors, and family members of those who have lost someone to a traumatic event. Artwork created during this workshop will be on exhibit in Site 2 & 3 Galleries from June 12th through 29th, with a special reception on June 12th, during the art center’s monthly 2nd Thursday Art Night.

Peace Paper facilitators Drew Matot and Margaret Mahan, along with art therapist Arielle Matthews, will bring a portable paper-making studio to the Torpedo Factory and lead this workshop designed for survivors of trauma so that they may transform their unique fibers into works of art; expressing their stories through the pulp while using the medium of papermaking to enrich their artistic voices.

While parts of this workshop are private due to the personal nature of the traumatic events participants have gone through, other parts will be done in the public space of the art center so that visitors can get a glimpse into what goes in to paper-making and the importance of art as an outlet for healing.

This workshop is completely free to participants. Funding was made possible through Target Gallery’s annual exhibition fundraiser in which money is raised specifically for outreach projects such as Peace Paper Project, and our upcoming exhibition of the AIDS Memorial Quilt at the end of July. Additional funding support was made possible through the Friends of the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Click Here to learn more about the workshop and how to register.

About Peace Paper
Recognizing the therapeutic benefits of the medium, Peace Paper works to make hand papermaking available to the world in numerous ways. Peace Paper works with survivors of trauma and uses a portable paper making studio and fibers that hold significance (such as articles of clothing that one might have worn during chemo treatment, or part of a military uniform, etc) to create handmade paper. Their goal is to bring paper to the people so that they may transform their unique fibers into works of art; expressing their stories through the pulp while using the medium of papermaking to enrich their artistic voices. About Art in Public Spaces
The Art in Public Spaces (APS) program serves as the community outreach arm for the Torpedo Factory Art Center (TFAC) by providing rotating exhibition and educational program opportunities. APS does this by utilizing the public space on all three floors of the art center. This program works with DC-metro area organizations in an effort to reach out to new and neglected groups, expanding the diversity of the audience to the TFAC. APS is managed by Target Gallery, national exhibition space of the Torpedo Factory Art Center.
