The Age of Light

Morrison House Presents: Dr. J. Thomas Schriempf, Physicist

Everyone is familiar with the Industrial Revolution and the Information Age, but we seldom hear about how lasers shape our modern world. Dr. J. Thomas Schriempf, a Navy Scientist who has spent a lifetime studying how laser light interacts with matter, will give simple explanations of how lasers work, as well as examples of their applications in industry, the arts, medicine, and more. This illustrated lecture will “en-lighten” guests about the impact of lasers on just about everything we touch in our daily lives, and how we depend on them.

Dr. J. Thomas Schriempf has been actively engaged in research with lasers and their interactions with materials since the late sixties. His career has included government, academic, and industrial positions, ranging from bench scientist to management and company vice president, as well as research and teaching at Pennsylvania State University. His government service includes over 20 years at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, and 2 years at the Defense Advance Research Agency. Presently, Dr. Schriempf is at the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) where he is a Highly Qualified Expert (HQE) and serves as the Technical Director of the Navy Directed Energy and Electric Weapon Systems Program Office.

Dr. Schriempf received his Ph.D. in Solid State Physics from Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1964. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the Directed Energy Professional Society. He has served on boards of various professional societies and has written over 70 articles for professional journals.
