Walt Whitman: A Living History ProgramMarch 24, 2012 - 4:00pm
Hear Walt Whitman "in person" as he talks about his experience as a volunteer nurse during the Civil War. This 90 minute program will be presented by Dr. Carrol Peterson. Whitman, now famous for his 12 poem volume Leaves of Grass, made daily visits to soldiers in hospitals in the DC area, providing what aid he could to the wounded and dying. He wrote about this experience in Drum Taps, and in the prose journalMemoranda During the War. "Whitman" will take questions after his monologue. Dr. Peterson will do likewise to conclude the event.
There is no admission fee, though voluntary donations for the support of the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association and the Athenaeum well be accepted at the door.
