EYA Moves Forward with Robinson Terminal South Following 5-1 City Council Vote

EYA, the developer of Robinson Terminal South, a luxury, mixed-use residential and retail complex on the Alexandria waterfront, has announced its plans to proceed with the project following the Alexandria City Council’s 5-1 approval on Saturday of a Development Special Use Permit.

Vice-Mayor Allison Silberberg voted against it and Paul Smedberg was absent from Saturday’s meeting, according to City spokesman Craig Fifer.

The process has been bumpy, with various groups and city council members concerned about everything from parking to the architectural design — particularly the amount of glass used — of the planned development. Many of those people and representatives from those groups spoke both for and against the project at Saturday’s meeting.

Pending construction permitting and ongoing Board of Architectural Review consideration, EYA expects the first move-ins and shop openings by the end of 2017.

“I want to thank the Mayor and Council, Planning Commission, The Board of Architectural Review, The Waterfront Commission, City of Alexandria staff and especially the citizens of Old Town, who have played a role in helping to shape our plans for Robinson Terminal South,” said Bob Youngentob, EYA president. “From the beginning, it was our intent to create an inclusive process that encouraged input from residents and businesses and sought their participation. We have listened to ideas, responded to concerns and incorporated creative recommendations. The project, and the community, is stronger as a result, and we look forward to delivering a world-class development to the Potomac riverfront that will help to implement the City’s new waterfront plan.”

Located in South Old Town on the site now occupied by Robinson Terminal warehouses at Union Street between Duke and Wolfe streets, Robinson Terminal South will transform the industrial area and create public access to the Alexandria waterfront now closed to residents and visitors. The project will include 26 luxury elevator town homes, up to 70 condominiums, a fine-dining waterfront restaurant and boutique retail space.

EYA plans to activate and beautify the riverfront by adding a public, walkable promenade, seating, public art and day slips for boaters.

Residents at Robinson Terminal South will join more than 1,500 Alexandria citizens currently living in other EYA communities built over the last 22 years, including several recent developments.
