Fireworks Use By Residents Remains Illegal In Alexandria

While neighboring jurisdictions allow certain types of fireworks, residents cannot possess or use fireworks in the City of Alexandria.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — As Fourth of July approaches, city officials are reminding residents that fireworks

Across Virginia, state code prohibits use of fireworks that "explode, travel laterally, rise into the air, or fire projectiles into the air," except for use by licensed contractors. While certain types of fireworks are allowed to be sold in neighboring Arlington and Fairfax counties, fireworks cannot be kept, sold or used in the City of Alexandria. That includes sparklers, novelty items or other fireworks.

Fireworks violations are considered a Class 1 misdemeanor with punishments of a fine up to $2,500, 12 months in jail or both.

"The Fourth of July is approaching, and we encourage the community to celebrate safely," said Alexandria Fire Chief Corey Smedley in a statement. "Our Fire Marshal’s Office remains diligent to ensure the safety of the community and to protect people, businesses and property, they will enforce the City’s ban on all fireworks used within city limits."

The fire department cites data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission showing there have been 136 deaths from fireworks misuse between 2005 and 2020. In 2020, there were an estimated 15,600 people needing emergency room treatment the U.S. due to fireworks accidents. More than half of these incidents were during the Fourth of July weekend.

Residents can enjoy fireworks at local shows, including the USA/Alexandria Birthday Celebration on Saturday, July 9 at Oronoco Bay Park from 6 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.

Residents can report fireworks violations to the police non-emergency number at 703-746-4444 while emergencies should be directed to 911.
