Free Sober Rides Offered During Halloween Weekend In DC Region
To help prevent drunk driving on regional roads, the Washington Regional Alcohol Program will offer free Lyft rides up to $15.
WASHINGTON, DC — For those heading to Halloween-themed parties with alcohol, there is an option to get a safe ride home in the DC region. As Halloween is one of the high-risk holidays for drunk driving, the nonprofit Washington Regional Alcohol Program will bring back its SoberRide program on Halloween weekend.
Between 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct.29 and 4 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 30, residents 21 and older can use a promo code to receive a Lyft ride up to $15. In 2021, 777 residents in the DC region used the promotion during the Halloween holiday period.
"Nearly half of U.S. traffic fatalities during Halloween involve drunk drivers according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration," said Kurt Erickson, WRAP’s president, in a statement. "Halloween is of particular concern for younger drivers as 2020 NHTSA data shows that 68-percent of drunk driving deaths on U.S. roadways during the fall holiday involve drivers ages 21 to 34."
