Friday Update: Alexandria Snow Plan for Today
Here's the latest update from the City of Alexandria regarding openings, closings, delays and more.

Here’s the latest information regarding City of Alexandria openings, closings, delays for Friday, after the big snow on Thursday:
- Snow Emergency Routes - Enforcement of snow emergency routes (which began at 7 a.m. on March 5) will end at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 6.
- City Facilities - For Friday, March 6, City offices and facilities will open on a two-hour delay. Emergency personnel should report as scheduled.
- Courts - For Friday, March 6, the Alexandria Circuit Court, Alexandria General District Court, and Alexandria Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court will be closed.
- Resource Recovery Collection - City crews completed refuse collection on March 5 but had to suspend recycling collection. Thursday’s recycling collection will resume on March 6, weather permitting.
- DASH Bus - For DASH Bus operating status, visit dashbus.com.
- Taxis - Between 9 a.m. on Thursday, March 5, and 10 a.m. on Friday, March 6, taxis are authorized to add a $5 snow surcharge. The purpose of a surcharge is to encourage taxis to continue to provide essential travel service.
- Alexandria City Public Schools - For school operating status, visit the Alexandria City Public Schools Emergency Information page. [Schools are closed Friday.]
- Snow Plowing - Use the City’s SnowReport tracking system to check on plowing priorities, the status of a street, or to submit a concern. Residents and businesses can help by staying off the roads during and after snowfall, not parking on posted snow emergency routes, promptly clearing sidewalks and entrances, not shoveling snow into the street, and clearing snow from around fire hydrants and storm drains.
- Sidewalks and Pathways - Under the City Code, sidewalks, driveways, and entrances are the responsibility of the adjacent property owner, occupant, community association, or business for snow removal. For this Level 2 storm, sidewalks must be cleared with 48 hours of the end of snowfall (i.e. by Saturday, March 7, at 9 p.m.). Failure to clear sidewalks may result in the City having the work done and charging the cost to the property owner, or fining the property owner $50.
